Tips that save money

Before you go to the shop

  • Keep up with oil changes and maintenance in your owner's manual; skipped maintenance causes many big repairs.
  • Learn what your dashboard warning lights mean from the owner's manual.
  • A parts store may read check-engine codes for free; the code is a clue, not a full diagnosis.
  • Ask friends and neighbors which shops they trust.

At the shop

  • Ask for the estimate by text or email so you have it in writing.
  • Ask whether a cheaper part type is available and how its warranty compares.
  • Ask if the repair can be combined with other work that shares labor, like replacing a water pump during a timing belt job.
  • Ask how long they will keep the car and whether there are storage fees.

After the repair

  • Test drive before leaving the lot if you can.
  • Watch for the same symptom over the next few days and report it right away.
  • Note the repair and mileage in a car log.
  • Put the warranty end date on your calendar.
