Step-by-step: if the bill is higher than you approved

  1. Stay calm and ask for the breakdown

Ask the service writer to walk you through each line that changed. Mistakes and misunderstandings are common and often easy to fix.

  2. Compare with your written approval

Show the estimate you approved. If extra work was done without your OK, say so clearly and politely.

  3. Ask for a manager

If the service writer cannot help, ask for the manager or owner. Write down names and what was said.

  4. Pay to get your car if needed

Shops may keep the car until the bill is paid. Paying under protest, by credit card, and writing "paid under protest" on the receipt can keep your options open.

  5. Put your complaint in writing

Send a short letter or email with dates, the approved amount, the billed amount and what you want.

  6. Escalate if needed

Contact your state consumer protection office or auto repair bureau, dispute the card charge, or consider small claims court.
