Sample conversation at the service counter

Here is an example of how a conversation at drop-off might go. Change the details to fit your car.

You: Hi, my car is making a grinding noise when I brake, mostly at low speed. Can you diagnose it and call me with a written estimate before doing any work?

Service writer: Sure. Our diagnostic fee is applied to the repair if you have us do it.

You: Great. When you call, can you split parts and labor and tell me how many labor hours you are quoting?

Service writer: Yes, we can text you the estimate.

You: Also, please sort anything you find into safety items, items that prevent bigger damage, and items that can wait.

Service writer: No problem.

You: And if I approve the work, I would like the old parts back. Please do not go over the approved amount without calling me first.

Service writer: Got it, I will note that on the work order.
